Thanks to you - our Parkinson’s community - for championing Parkinson’s awareness this April
Apr. 30, 2025
As Parkinson’s Awareness Month comes to an end, we’re saying thank you to our incredible Parkinson’s community.
This year Fight Parkinson’s wanted to shine the light on you, our fantastic community members who consistently rise to the occasion to fight Parkinson’s.
The confidence and compassion the Parkinson’s community has shown this month has been astounding. From fundraising to attending events, sharing your stories and helping shine a light on Parkinson’s, this April you showed the resilience, strength and heart of the Parkinson’s community. You truly helped us come together to fight Parkinson’s together.
Ambassadors to the fore
It would be remiss for us to not begin by saying a big thank you to those who allowed us to share their stories this month.
We started the month hearing Peter’s experience finding the Parkinson’s community just 18-months ago and were reminded by Travis that while diagnosis is not always a linear experience, you can continue to live well with Parkinson’s.
Tom spoke to the importance of having multiple support networks and building a personal health team. Carol emphasised how connecting with her local Parkinson’s community has benefited her.
Kylie and Richard reminded us that a Parkinson’s diagnosis does not need to mark the end of sport or adventure. While Sharon rallied the troops for a trivia night to raise awareness and Laura reflected on stepping into a caring role for her husband Laurence.
Everyone who shared their stories with the Parkinson’s community this month are beacons for hope, sparking important conversations and encouraging more people to get involved.
Near and far
This month the voices of the Parkinson’s community could not be missed. From our A Walk in the Park ambassadors spreading the word to our online cohort supporting each and every story we shared with you.
You shared posters, started conversations, changed profile pictures and helped increase visibility for people living with Parkinson’s and all those it impacts.
On April 27 you packed Federation Square for one of our most successful A Walk in the Park events yet – keep an eye out for more to come on its success!
In one of our biggest years for regional walks, the Parkinson’s community has shown that this condition affects communities big and small in every corner of the state. Your dedication to raising awareness and coming together as a united front is admirable.
Big things coming in the research space
We also had several exciting research announcements this April, including the recipients of our inaugural Fight Parkinson’s Seed Funding Grants and the launch of ParkinsonNet coming to Australia.
The Fight Parkinson’s Seed Funding Grant Program supports early-stage ideas with the potential for major breakthroughs. This year’s recipients will explore brain regeneration and women’s health through exercise.
We were thrilled to announce these projects at the annual Research Symposium early in the month, which was once again well attended by community both in person and online. Your attendance shows researchers and clinicians you want to know more and encourages them to continue exploring Parkinson’s research and care options.
Funding for these projects would not be possible without the generosity of the Parkinson’s community and your continued support.
Hearing from you
Sharing your story can be a daunting but the bravery of those who shared their stories this Parkinson’s Awareness Month has already inspired others.
We know there are countless more stories waiting to be told and it is our honour to hear from our passionate community. If you are living with Parkinson’s, a carer or a dedicated fundraiser you have a story to tell. We want to help you share it.
Your stories create change. They start conversations, inspire hope and encourage others to become involved in this wonderful community.
To share your story, whether now or in the future, email marketing@fightparkinsons.org.au. We can’t wait to hear from you.
