Parkinson’s Awareness Month 2026: The Why

In 2025, Fight Parkinson’s received over 7,500 community member and health professional registrations to our health education programs.

This Parkinson’s Awareness Month—with only one week left to go!—we are continuing to spread the knowledge of Parkinson’s by answering some Frequently Asked Questions. Read on below to learn the answers to some common ‘Why’ questions about Parkinson’s.

The Why

Why do people get Parkinson’s?

Currently there is no known cause of Parkinson’s or understanding of why some people develop Parkinson’s and not others. This is the reason Parkinson’s is often referred to as Idiopathic Parkinson’s. There are many theories as to the causes of Parkinson’s and it’s generally thought that multiple factors are responsible.

Through research, our understanding of the possible causes of Parkinson’s is increasing all of the time. Areas of current research include ageing, genes, environmental factors, chemical exposure, and viruses.

Why is there no cure for Parkinson’s?

Parkinson’s has no cure because it is a complex, progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects multiple brain pathways, and by the time symptoms appear, significant neuronal damage has already occurred.

However, Fight Parkinson’s is committed to raising funds to advance research that will deliver effective therapies, treatments, care, and prevention and to empower our community to live full and active lives.

Why does Parkinson’s research take so long?

Research takes time to gather sufficient data and evidence to support drug development, and it is essential to ensure that any new treatments are safe and effective. Additionally, the process involves rigorous clinical trials to test the efficacy and safety of new therapies. Furthermore, the condition’s progression is gradual, and understanding its mechanisms requires a comprehensive approach that considers various factors, including genetics, environment, and lifestyle.

Why do we need Parkinson’s awareness?

Parkinson’s awareness in Australia is crucial for several reasons:

  • Early detection: Awareness campaigns help in recognising early signs of Parkinson’s, allowing for timely diagnosis and intervention.
  • Support and care: Increased awareness leads to better understanding of the condition, which in turn supports those living with Parkinson’s and their loved ones.
  • Community engagement: Awareness drives community engagement and advocacy, fostering a supportive environment for individuals with Parkinson’s.
  • Research funding: Awareness is essential for funding research that seeks to understand and treat Parkinson’s, ultimately improving future care and treatment options.

By raising awareness, we can empower individuals living with Parkinson’s, connect them with the resources they need, and contribute to the ongoing research and advocacy efforts.
