Research call-out: Peripheral stimulation as a treatment for Parkinson’s disease gait impairments

Investigate the effectiveness of applying non-invasive stimulation (in the form of vibration or mild electrical pulses) to the feet to improve walking in Parkinson’s disease (PD).

Who can participate?

Individuals with Parkinson’s disease who:

  • Have walking impairments
  • Are less than 85 years old
  • Have no other neurological condition

What does it involve?

Visiting the Kingston Centre, Cheltenham

  • Attend an initial 3-hr information & assessment session
  • If eligible, 5 consecutive visits to the Kingston Centre for daily stimulation
  • Two follow-up visits to assess the effects of stimulation

During the study visit, participants will:

  • Have stimulation (either vibration or mild electrical pulses) applied to their feet
  • Have PD symptoms assessed
  • Be asked to walk on a floor mat with sensors to measure gait
  • Have brain activity recorded using a non-invasive technique called EEG
