Research call-out: The eye as a window into Parkinson’s

Researchers at the University of Melbourne are conducting a study to understand whether the eye can be used as a window to help diagnose, monitor, and develop new treatments for Parkinson’s. The project also includes people with Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behaviour Disorder (RBD), a condition associated with an increased likelihood of developing Parkinson’s.

Many people with Parkinson’s or RBD experience changes in vision. Early findings suggest that subtle differences in retinal structure, visual processing, and sensory responses may help identify these conditions earlier and more accurately. This study aims to bring together several simple, non‑invasive tests to better understand these changes and explore their potential role in future diagnostic tools.
