Neurological and neuromuscular conditions affect more than one in four Australians. While our communities represent many different conditions, we share common challenges – and a powerful collective voice.
The Summit reinforced the need for coordinated national action, including:
- A National Action Plan for Neurological Conditions
- A dedicated Neurological Nursing Workforce Strategy with stronger training, career pathways and advanced practice roles
- Better national data, equitable access to care and services and genuine involvement of people with lived experience.
We welcomed the strong parliamentary engagement throughout the day, including contributions from parliamentary hosts – Senator Deborah O’Neill, Dr Anne Webster MP, Dr Trish Cook MP, Dr Helen Haines MP and Joe Kelly MP on strengthening the neurological nursing workforce, and Dr Gordon Reid MP and Dr Monique Ryan MP on clinical leadership and health reform.
We also appreciated the perspectives of Senator the Hon Anne Ruston and the many people with lived experience, clinicians, researchers and sector leaders who contributed to the discussion.
For Fight Parkinson’s, collaboration across the neurological and neuromuscular community is essential. Together, we can advocate more effectively for the national leadership, skilled workforce and coordinated systems needed to deliver better outcomes for millions of Australians – and for the families and carers who support them.
